At Curtis Performance Horses, we endeavor to raise elite cutting and reining horses. We put great emphasis on both pedigree and the horse as an individual, striving to build an impeccable selection of broodmares. Our highly selective mare program insists both on superlative genotype throughout the pedigree, as well as phenotype – the conformation to perform over the long run blended with quality and charisma to make any owner proud. We prioritize genotypic depth and conformation over LTE for our mares. In addition, we favor large mares with excellent bone and substantial body ensuring their offspring can stand up to the rigors of today’s performance horse training regimen.

In today’s performance horse industry, it is not hard to find mares with exceptional top sides. Every year, hundreds of such horses are born.  However, the pedigrees of many of these horses break down on the maternal side, introducing potential genotype weakness and lack of homogeneity. Rare is the mare that directly and closely traces on the maternal side to a truly dominant female. It is this rare combination of paternal and maternal dominance that provides the greatest chance for prepotency and elite performance.

Consequently, although all of our mares are by elite stallions, our mare program focuses on the maternal side.  We strive for our horse to trace on the female side to a mare herself as dominant as the great cutting stallions of history.  Typically, the bottom sides of our mares trace within the first two or three generations to maternal royalty, e.g., Royal Blue Boon and Little Badger Dulce. In other cases, our mares full siblings of leading performance horse sires, like Boonlight Dancer.  But as we have said, genetics is necessary, but not sufficient.  We have carefully selected our mares for elite conformation as well. They are all exceptionally balanced, and have good bone and angulation where they should.  We believe these mares have the genetic potential to not only produce truly great performance horses in their own right, but the sires of the next generation as well – that is, we believe, the mark of a truly outstanding mare.
